Details

Some people want a tasteful cake. This is for everybody else. The topper reads HAPPY F*CKING BIRTHDAY, printed in full on the actual product with no asterisk, and beside the lettering a cartoon dog raises a martini glass in a small, dry toast.

It is cut as one solid silhouette, so the words hold up from the other side of a room and read clearly in photos, which is generally the point. Behind the lettering sits a socket moulded into the base for a standard upright cake fountain, the ice fountain type sold in supermarkets. Sparks going up while the cake swears at somebody is a strong combination.

  • The fountain is not included and is not something we sell.
  • It is a firework, so treat it like one: an adult lights it, stays with it and follows the instructions on the packet. Upright cake-fountain type only, never a thin handheld sparkler.

3D printed to order in rigid PLA in our studio in Spain, about 15 cm (6 in) wide, on a flat bar base that stands on icing or straight on the table beside the drinks. There is nothing to choose on this one: it arrives in the single finish you see in the photographs, because the joke lands hardest when the lettering is one solid block. It is not edible, so lift it off before anyone cuts.

Where it earns its keep is the years afterwards. A card topper goes in the bin with the wrapping paper. This one is rigid, wipes clean, and has a habit of being passed around a group of friends as each of them hits the next round number.

Fair warning: the language on the product is uncensored. Ideal for a 30th, 40th or 50th among people who will laugh, less ideal for a christening or an office where HR sits nearby.

The dog is what keeps it affectionate rather than aggressive: it is holding the martini at an angle, mid-toast, and it stops the whole thing reading as a telling-off.

Questions about this topper

Is the word actually printed in full on the topper?

Yes. The physical topper is uncensored and spells the word out completely. We only star it out here because listing rules and search results are a bit prim. If you need something you can put on a work cake, this is not it, and we would rather tell you now.

Am I buying the fountain as well?

No. You are buying the topper and its built-in holder. Add a standard upright cake fountain, sold as an ice fountain in UK supermarkets and party shops, and it slots into the base. It has to be the upright cone or cylinder kind, never a thin handheld sparkler on a wire.

Can a cake fountain be lit indoors?

Indoor upright cake fountains are made for it, but they are still fireworks. One adult lights it and stays with it, following the instructions on the packet. Keep it clear of low ceilings, banners and hair, keep children back, and never leave it burning while you fetch the phone.

Can I pass it round the group next year?

Yes, and people do. It is rigid PLA rather than card, so it does not bend, curl or go soft when the cake goes back in the fridge. Wipe the icing off, dry it, and it is ready for the next unfortunate birthday. Several customers pass one around the same group of friends.

Can it go on the cake itself?

It stands on top of the icing on its flat bar base and comes off before the cake is cut and served. It is not food and it is not edible. If you would rather it did not touch the buttercream at all, sit it on a small plaque or a strip of baking parchment.

How wide is it and where does it stand?

About 15 cm (6 in) wide, on a flat bar base. That fills the top of a 6 in cake and sits neatly on anything larger. It also stands perfectly well straight on the table next to the drinks, which is where it tends to end up once the cake has been cut.
