An anchor with rope coiled around the shank, standing over a name in raised capitals. It is a clean, grown-up design with no cartoon fish and no primary colours, which is why it tends to get bought for dads, grandads, retiring skippers and anybody whose weekends involve a marina.
The fountain socket sits directly behind the anchor, so the sparks climb along the shaft and the anchor is left in silhouette against them. On a dark cake with a gold drip it looks like something a hotel would charge extra for.
Type the name the way you want it and that is exactly how it prints, capitals included. Personalisation is free and adds nothing to the lead time. The topper is about 15 cm (6 in) wide, and longer names push the height up slightly.
- The upright cake fountain is not included and we do not sell them. Buy the standard ice fountain type from a supermarket or party shop.
- Never put a thin handheld sparkler in the socket. It is a firework: adult supervision, follow the instructions on the packet, and never leave it lit and unattended.
We 3D print each one to order in rigid PLA in our studio in Spain. Ten colours are available: black, grey, blue, pink, purple, yellow and four rainbow blends coded RGP, RBG, RYB and BBP. Grey reads like galvanised metal and black looks sharp against white icing, which covers most nautical cakes.
It is a decoration rather than food, so it lifts off before the cake is cut. After that it is a solid little object with someone's name on it, which is why people hang on to them: a retirement do, a 50th or 60th, a boat naming, or a seaside birthday that needed a theme.
The rope is modelled as a real coil that wraps round the shank and passes behind it rather than sitting beside it as a flat squiggle. Side-on you can see daylight through the loop.
Questions about this topper
Do I have to buy the fountain myself?
Yes. The anchor is the holder, and you buy the fountain separately. Look for a standard upright cake fountain, sold as an ice fountain in UK supermarkets and party shops. Only the upright cone or cylinder type belongs in the socket, never a thin handheld sparkler on a wire.
Can I use a boat name or a surname instead?
Yes. The personalisation field takes whatever you type, so a boat name, a surname or a nickname all work. Very long entries make the topper taller and the letters a little finer, so a single word or a short pair reads best. It prints exactly as typed, capitals included.
Is the topper edible or food safe?
Neither. It is a 3D printed PLA decoration that sits on top of the icing and is lifted off before the cake is cut and served. We do not sell it as food safe. If you would rather it did not touch the icing, rest it on a small plaque or a strip of baking parchment.
What colour works best on a dark cake?
Grey and black are the two that suit nautical cakes best. Grey has a galvanised, weathered-metal look that reads well against navy icing or a gold drip, while black gives a hard silhouette against pale icing. Blue works if the cake is largely white and you want the anchor to stand out.
Does it last once it comes off the cake?
It does. Rinse the icing off in warm soapy water, dry it, and you are left with a solid printed object with somebody's name on it. People keep them on desks and in boat cabins. Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun, which is the one thing PLA dislikes.
Will it get here in time for a retirement do?
