An angler stands mid-cast with the rod bent double and a fish already on the line, the whole scene balanced on top of his name in bold block capitals. It is a cake topper for the man who talks about the one that got away at every family meal: a dad's 50th, a grandad's 70th, a retirement do, or a Father's Day cake that gets a laugh before anyone tastes it.
The base has a socket moulded into it, sitting between the letters and directly under the fishing line. Push in a standard upright cake fountain, the cone or cylinder that UK shops sell as an ice fountain, and it stands square while it burns so the sparks rise between the rod and the fish. The fountain is not included and we do not sell it. Buy the upright type only; thin handheld sparklers do not belong in this socket. Light it with an adult present, follow the instructions on the firework's own packaging, and never walk away from it while it is lit.
Every topper is 3D printed to order in PLA in our studio in Spain. PLA is a rigid plant-based plastic, so the rod and the line come out fine and sharp rather than fuzzy. It is about 15 cm (6 in) wide, with the height changing a touch depending on the name length. There are ten colours, four of them rainbow blends. It is not edible, so it comes off the cake before the knife goes in.

The rod tip and the line are the thinnest parts of the print, and they are what makes people pick it up and turn it over. Set it slightly off-centre with the rod pointing away from the candles.
Questions about this topper
Does it come with the ice fountain for the socket?
No. You are buying the topper with its built-in holder. Add a standard upright cake fountain yourself, sold in the UK as an ice fountain, from a party shop or supermarket. It slides into the socket in the base. Thin handheld sparklers are the wrong type and should not be used.
Is it safe to light a fountain next to the rod and line?
Yes, if you use the upright cake-fountain type and treat it like the small firework it is. The socket sits clear of the rod. Move the cake away from curtains and low ceilings, keep children at a distance, light it with a long lighter and stay with it until it burns out.
Does the topper go on the icing, and can anyone eat it?
It sits on top of the icing on its own flat base, like a candle holder, and gets lifted off before the cake is cut. It is not edible and nothing about it is meant to be eaten or stored with food. Rinse it, dry it, and it becomes a keepsake.
Will it suit an 8 in cake?
It is about 15 cm (6 in) wide, so on an 8 in round it covers around three-quarters of the top without overhanging. On a 6 in cake it runs nearly edge to edge, which reads as deliberate. On a 10 in or tiered cake it sits comfortably in the middle.
Can he keep it in the shed afterwards?
That is where most of them end up, next to the mantelpiece contingent. It is rigid printed plastic, not card or wafer, so it does not wilt in the fridge or tear when you pull it off. Wash off any buttercream, dry it properly and keep it out of hot cars.
