Details

A soft-eared teddy sitting against a big number, with the name printed in serif capitals along the base bar underneath. It is built for the birthdays where the number is still small and everyone photographs the cake before the child gets near it: a 1st, a 2nd, a christening tea, a naming day, or a baby shower where you already know the name.

There is a socket moulded into the base, behind the bear. It takes a standard upright cake fountain, the cone or cylinder sold in UK shops as an ice fountain, and holds it upright while it burns. Please be sensible about this one in particular: it is a small firework on a cake in a room full of small children. The fountain is not included and we do not sell it. Only the upright cake-fountain type belongs in this holder, never a thin handheld sparkler. An adult lights it, keeps children well back, follows the instructions on the packaging and stays with it until it is out and cool.

We 3D print each topper to order in PLA, a rigid plant-based plastic, in our studio in Spain. It arrives exactly as photographed, with the bear picked out against the number, so there is nothing to choose. It is about 15 cm (6 in) wide, and the height changes a little with the length of the name. Not edible, so it lifts off before the cake is cut, then it washes clean and usually ends up on a nursery shelf.

  • Type the name and the age exactly as you want them, capitals and all. We copy your text character for character, and personalisation costs nothing.
  • Buying for an older child? Our dinosaur, dragon and unicorn toppers take a name and come in ten colours.

The number is the tall element and the bear leans into it, so the design still reads in a photograph taken over somebody's shoulder. Most parents stand it slightly to one side, so the child's face is not hidden behind it.

Questions about this topper

Is the ice fountain part of the order?

No. The topper is the holder only, and we do not sell fireworks. You buy a standard upright cake fountain yourself, sold in UK shops as an ice fountain, and drop it into the socket in the base. Thin handheld sparklers are the wrong shape and should never be used in it.

Is a cake fountain a good idea with toddlers in the room?

It is a firework, so treat it as one. Keep children back while it burns, have one adult in charge of lighting it with a long lighter, stand the cake away from curtains, balloons and low ceilings, and follow the packaging instructions. Plenty of people skip the fountain for a 1st birthday.

Will it survive going into the memory box?

That is rather the point. It is rigid printed plastic, not card, so it washes in warm soapy water and dries without warping. Most go onto a nursery shelf or into the memory box with the photos. Keep it out of hot cars and direct sunlight, which is the only thing PLA minds.

Does it touch the icing, and should anything be eaten?

It stands on the icing on its own flat base and is lifted off before the cake is cut, the same as candles. It is a decoration, not food, and it is not edible. If you want no contact at all, rest it on a small disc of baking paper.

How do I get a baby's name spelled exactly right?

Type the name and the age into the personalisation box exactly as you want them printed. We copy your entry character for character and do not correct capitals, accents or spacing. GABRIEL and Gabriel print differently, so read it back once before checking out.

How long does delivery take for a first birthday?

We print to order in 1-3 working days, then tracked delivery to the UK takes 4-7 working days from Spain at EUR 8.95. Spain is 2-4 at EUR 3.95 and the rest of the EU 3-6 at EUR 6.95, free on orders of EUR 35 or more. Two weeks ahead removes the stress.
