Four words on a cake: SURVIVED ANOTHER YEAR. It is the birthday topper for the friend who says they do not want a fuss and then sulks if there is no cake, and for the 30th, 40th or 50th where the honest sentiment is congratulations on still being here. Add the number and the joke lands harder.
The base has a socket moulded into it, sitting behind the lettering. Put in a standard upright cake fountain, the cone or cylinder that UK shops sell as an ice fountain, and it stands straight while it burns so the sparks go up behind the words. The fountain is not included and we do not sell fireworks, so pick one up wherever you buy candles and balloons. It takes the upright type only, never thin handheld sparklers. An adult should light it, follow the instructions printed on the firework, and stay with it until it has burnt out.
Every one is 3D printed to order in PLA, a rigid plant-based plastic, in our two-person studio in Spain. It is about 15 cm (6 in) wide, with a wide flat base that holds its own on soft buttercream, and the height moves a little depending on the number. There are ten colours, four of them rainbow blends. It is not edible and it is not a candle: lift it off before the cake is cut, wash it, and it will still be in the drawer next birthday.

The wording is set in stacked lines rather than one long strip, which is why it holds together on a 6 in cake instead of hanging over both sides. A dark finish on pale icing stays legible in the blurry photographs taken later on.
Questions about this topper
Is a cake fountain included with it?
No, and we do not sell fireworks. This is the topper with a holder built into the base. You add a standard upright cake fountain, sold in the UK as an ice fountain, from a party shop or supermarket. Thin handheld sparklers are the wrong type and are not safe in it.
Is there any swearing on this one?
None. It is sarcastic rather than rude, so it is safe for a work cake, a family lunch or a grandparent who does not find bad language funny. If you want the properly rude option, our Happy F*cking Birthday topper is uncensored on the physical product.
What goes in the personalisation box?
One number: the age. Type 40 and it prints 40. We copy the box exactly and do not correct or reformat it, so give it one last read before you check out. Personalisation is free and it does not add any time to the order.
Can the same topper be used for somebody else next year?
You can reuse it as often as you like, though it prints with one age on it, so it repeats best for the same person the following decade or as a running joke. It is rigid PLA, so it washes clean in warm soapy water and does not curl the way card does.
Does it go on the cake like a candle?
It stands on the icing on its flat base, much as a candle holder does, and is lifted off before the cake is cut and served. It is not edible and nothing about it should be eaten. It is a decorative keepsake printed in PLA, a rigid plant-based plastic.
